How Much Rainwater Can You Collect From Your Roof?

One inch of rain on 1,000 square feet of roof produces about 623 gallons of gross runoff. A system collecting 75% of that would receive about 467 gallons—far more than one 55-gallon barrel can hold. The arithmetic is easy; matching storage to rainfall timing and actual use is the real design problem.

Gross gallons = roof square feet x rainfall inches x 0.623. Collectible yield applies the entered efficiency. Real capture also depends on roof geometry, downspout routing, first-flush diversion, tank starting level, overflow, leaks, and rainfall timing.

The useful formula

The Department of Energy's rainwater tool and EPA methods use essentially the same conversion:

gross gallons = catchment area in square feet x rainfall in inches x 0.623
collectible gallons = gross gallons x collection efficiency

Use only the part of the roof that drains to the connected downspout. A 2,000-square-foot house does not automatically provide 2,000 square feet of catchment to one tank. Roof geometry may divide the runoff among four or more downspouts.

Efficiency is not a universal specification. First-flush diversion, screens, roof texture, splash, leaks, gutter overflow, and wind all remove water from the theoretical total. The calculator defaults to 75% because EPA used that standard efficiency in one published model, not because every home system delivers it.

Yield is not the same as storage

A 55-gallon barrel connected to 1,000 square feet of roof can fill from less than one-eighth inch of collectible rain. Once full, additional water must go to an overflow route. Buying another barrel adds 55 gallons of storage; it does not change how much rain falls or how quickly the household uses the water.

Tank sizing therefore needs a running balance:

ending storage = starting storage + collectible rain - use - overflow

Monthly rainfall averages can estimate annual yield, but they hide storm timing. Two inches spread across four small events behaves differently from two inches falling on an already-full tank. What 275 gallons actually covers

At 20 gallons per day for garden irrigation, a full 275-gallon tote provides about 13.8 days before another rain. At 50 gallons per day it provides 5.5 days. Those are storage calculations, not promises about crop needs; weather, soil, crop, season, and irrigation method change demand.

If the planned use exceeds the tank, adding more catchment area will not fix the dry interval. If the tank frequently overflows and later empties before rain, more storage may help. If it rarely fills, the constraint is catchment or rainfall. That distinction prevents buying a large tank that the roof cannot fill—or a large roof connection feeding a tank that discards most storms.

Treat ordinary roof runoff as non-potable

This page models collection volume for uses such as irrigation and other locally permitted non-potable applications. It does not declare roof runoff safe to drink.

EPA notes that roof runoff can carry metals or hydrocarbons from roofing, atmospheric deposits, and bacteria from animal droppings. Its residential guidance says not to drink rain-barrel water or use it inside the home or for pets, and warns against spraying it directly on vegetables or leaves. Potable rainwater systems require a separate site-specific treatment, testing, materials, plumbing, and regulatory analysis.

Keep tanks covered and screened, send overflow away from the foundation, provide a stable base, and account for weight. EPA notes that a full 55-gallon barrel weighs about 450 pounds. A 275-gallon tank holds roughly five times that water mass before adding the tank and base.

Check rules before buying hardware

Rainwater rules differ by state and locality, especially for indoor use and plumbing connections. DOE maintains a state regulation layer in its Rainwater Harvesting Tool. Local plumbing, mosquito-control, cross-connection, and building rules can be more specific. Verify them before designing the system around a use that may not be allowed.
