Food Disruption

The "three days of food" figure that circulates everywhere has a specific origin and a specific meaning, and it is not a claim about how long supermarkets can feed a city. Understanding where it actually came from changes what you buy and how much of it.

Food preparedness has two halves that people routinely conflate. One is holding calories that keep for years without power or attention. The other is keeping what you already own from spoiling when the freezer stops. They call for completely different equipment, different skills, and different amounts of money.

Cost per calorie is the number that exposes marketing fastest. A bucket priced by number of servings tells you very little, because a serving is a marketing unit rather than a measurement. The same bucket priced per thousand calories is directly comparable to a bag of rice.
