Does Stored Water Go Bad? Rotation, Treatment, and Shelf Life

Water is a stable inorganic compound and does not spoil. Properly filled, sealed, and stored municipal water remains safe indefinitely. The six-month rotation advice repeated everywhere is precautionary, and what it is actually guarding against is contamination introduced during filling, plastic degradation over years, and residual chlorine dissipating to the point where anything that did get in can multiply.
Rotating is still worth doing. The reason is not that the water went bad on a schedule.
What actually changes over time
Taste flattens. Stored water loses dissolved oxygen and tastes noticeably dull or stale after a few months. Pouring it between two containers a few times aerates it and restores the taste completely. This is the change people notice and misinterpret as spoilage.
Chlorine dissipates. Municipal water arrives with a free chlorine residual that provides ongoing protection against anything introduced. That residual declines over weeks to months depending on temperature and container. Once it is gone, the water is still safe, but it has no defense against contamination.
Plastic degrades. PETE soda bottles become brittle over several years and eventually fail at the seams. HDPE lasts far longer but is not permanent. Both are gas-permeable enough that strong nearby odors eventually migrate in.
Seals fail. Caps loosen with temperature cycling, gaskets harden, and a container that was airtight in year one may not be in year five.
Algae grows if light reaches the water. This requires light and is entirely preventable with opaque containers or dark storage.
Biofilm develops if organic material was present at filling, which is the real argument for cleaning containers properly rather than for rotating them.
The rotation question
Six months is the commonly cited interval and it is a reasonable default for containers you filled yourself from the tap, particularly repurposed bottles where your cleaning may or may not have been thorough.
Commercially bottled water carries a printed date, typically two years out, which is a taste and container-integrity date rather than a safety date. The FDA does not require an expiration date on bottled water and the water inside remains safe past it.
Purpose-built storage containers, properly cleaned and sealed, holding treated municipal water, kept cool and dark, realistically go several years without issue. Five years is a defensible interval for a well-sealed 55-gallon drum.
The practical policy that works is rotating what is easy to rotate and leaving alone what is not. Two-liter bottles get poured on the garden and refilled twice a year without effort. A 55-gallon drum does not, and pretending otherwise means it never gets done at all.
Rotating without wasting it
Water the garden or houseplants with it. Nothing is lost and the containers get refilled.
Use it for laundry, mopping, or car washing.
Run it through the toilet tank.
Drink it. There is nothing wrong with it, and drinking your stored supply while refilling is the least wasteful rotation possible.
Date every container with the fill date rather than a projected expiry, because the projection depends on conditions you cannot predict and the fill date does not change.
When to treat, and when not to
Municipal tap water needs nothing added before storage. It arrives chlorinated. Adding bleach to already-treated water raises the chlorine level without extending safety meaningfully, and the residual will dissipate on its own schedule regardless.
Well water and untreated sources should be treated before storage, and the dose depends on the sodium hypochlorite percentage printed on the bottle rather than on the figures most charts give, which are keyed to a formulation that is being discontinued. Water that has been stored a long time and is of uncertain condition should be treated before drinking rather than trusted. Treating at point of use is always available and costs almost nothing.
Water preserver concentrates sold for five-year storage are stabilized chlorine products. They work as described. Whether they are worth the price over a container of plain bleach and a date label is a judgment call, and the honest answer is that they mostly buy you not having to think about it.
Signs to discard
Cloudiness, sediment, or anything suspended.
Visible algae or a green tint, which means light reached it.
Any smell other than faint chlorine. Plastic, chemical, or musty odors mean something migrated in or grew.
Slimy container walls, which is biofilm.
A compromised seal, a cracked container, or any sign the cap was not tight.
In every one of these cases the water can be filtered and treated rather than discarded if the situation calls for it, but it should not be considered a clean supply. What each treatment method removes is in filter, purify, or distill.
Freezing
Frozen stored water is unaffected chemically and is a legitimate storage method, with the bonus that a full freezer holds temperature far longer during an outage than an empty one.
Leave headspace, since water expands roughly nine percent on freezing and will split a rigid full container. Two-liter bottles filled to about 80 percent are the usual approach.
Thawed water is exactly as good as it was going in.
The practical setup
Clean containers, filled from the tap, capped tight, dated, stored cool and dark and off the concrete. Container choice and placement are in what to store water in.
Rotate the small containers twice a year without ceremony, and check the large ones annually for seal integrity and clarity rather than emptying them.
Keep a treatment method available regardless of how good the stored supply looks, because the ability to make questionable water drinkable outlasts any fixed quantity.
