Two variables govern everything. Relative humidity determines how much water is available in a given volume of air. Temperature determines how much energy it takes to get that air below its dew point. Warm and humid is easy. Cool and dry is close to impossible, because the air holds almost nothing and you're spending energy chilling it regardless.

Sixty gallons is roughly 227 litres. At the best efficiency in that table — 0.84 kWh per litre, achieved in the single most favourable month of the year — 227 litres requires about 190 kWh per day.

A typical American household uses around 29 kWh per day in total.

Even measured against the best commercial units available, which achieve about 200 Wh per litre, 227 litres draws roughly 45 kWh — still more than an average household's entire daily consumption. Condensate is not automatically drinking water. It's distilled water that has sat on a coil, in a tray, and in tubing, picking up whatever was on those surfaces and whatever was airborne. Commercial units handle this with sealed food-grade collection paths, UV sterilisation, and re-mineralisation, certified as complete systems. Certification of one component does not certify an assembled build, and the surfaces upstream of a filter are exactly where biofilm forms. Treat any homemade output as raw water requiring the same treatment as any untreated source.

What it actually costs

The $50 is the front end. Products in this marketplace typically present an upsell sequence after payment details are entered, and the advertised figure is where the transaction begins rather than ends.
